The RUST Horse Guide

This RUST horse guide video is brought to you by our partner Jfarr.

In this video, Jfarr introduces us to the intricacies of RUST’s horses. The introduction of horses to RUST came in the Giddy Up! update, on June 6th, 2019. With this RUST update, players were granted a new mechanism to quickly traverse the map, without having to hit the skies or waterways.

Horses have many advantages to them and are significantly quieter than the buzzing sounds of other transport vessels, such as the minicopters, scrap transport helicopter, rowboats, and the RHIBs.

Hey guys, Jfarr here.

Horse riding is a somewhat new edition to Rust, making them the first rideable animals. Horses provide players with a faster way to travel the world of Rust with an increase of protection and enjoyment.

Finding Your Horse

Slot Machine With Horseshoes

Horses can be found naturally within most biomes and are most common around roads and monuments. Horses spawn with saddle already equipped, allowing you to ride off without pre-built equipment. This feature will likely be changed, requiring you to build a saddle to ride the horse.

In total, you can find ten different breeds of horses that can provide additional speed and health, while for each breed, the stamina remains the same. The white and black fur bred horses will be the best to find since they are the fastest type of horses coming in at a speed of 54km an hour, while other horses tend to sit around 38, 43, or 47km an hour.

The speed for each horse will also depend on the terrain, with roads being the best for max speed. Almost all horses come with total health of 400 with the exception being the Bay breed, which comes with 440 health. This will allow the horse to take an additional shot or two before being killed compared to the other horses.

Horse Health & Stamina

Once you have found a horse, its total available stamina will likely be low and require a boost. If the total stamina reaches zero the horse will die. So by feeding up meats, vegetables, packaged food, and fruit, the total available stamina will increase and additionally heal the horse.

The most effective food to heal your horse includes the pumpkin, raspberries, cooked chicken, cooked deer, and blueberries, which adds 20 health points per item. With a decreased total available stamina, the horse will not sustain a sprint for long.

When sprinting the horse will quickly lose stamina, which can be recharged over time by allowing the horse to rest or move at a slower pace. Sprinting will also further reduce the total stamina available, later requiring you to feed it. The max speed for your horse is also affected by the total available stamina. So if you want to go fast, make sure to keep your horse’s total stamina full. A horse can be fed by placing the food in front of its head.

Once the food has been thrown on the ground, the horse will automatically eat the food. The horse can also eat grown crops without the need of you picking them, and can be done while riding it. The most effective food to feed your horse for stamina is a pumpkin, cooked bear meat, chocolate bar, and a can of beans, which adds 6.4 points worth of stamina per item.

Overall, the pumpkin is the best type of food you can feed your hose since it’ll both heal and refill stamina the best out of any other food item.

Housing Your Horse

Horses naturally lose stamina over time, and will eventually die. This process is increased if they’ve been contained within a building. To mitigate this, you can build a hitch and trough which is a default blueprint and will keep your horses healthy and fed as long as it’s filled with food which can be placed within its inventory.

This will now allow you to keep your horses within your house or compound while logged out without them dying.

Equiping Your Horse

Horses come with four equipment slots, allowing you to equip crafted or found attachments to improve your horse’s performance, health, and storage. The equipment attachments include a basic horseshoe, a high-quality horseshoe, wooden horse armor, road sign horse armor, and a saddlebag.

The saddlebag which is a default blueprint will reduce the max speed by 3.6km an hour, but provides 6 extra slots of inventory for the horse, making it a travelling chest as long as it’s not dead. The saddlebags are the only attachment that can be placed within multiple equipment slots to provide even more inventory space. With the armour attachment, both types of horse armor will protect the animal and the rider.

The wooden armor will provide a 25% protection increase to the horse and a 20% increase to the player, while the road sign will provide a 50% increase to the horse and a 40% increase to the player. The wooden armor, which is a default blueprint, will decrease the horse’s speed by 10.8km an hour, while the road sign armor, which is a level two workbench blueprint, will decrease the speed by 21.6km an hour.

In addition, the wooden horse armor will provide 6 inventory slots like the saddlebag. The next and final attachments are the horseshoes. The basic horseshoes, which are a default blueprint, can be equipped to increase the horse’s speed by 5.4km an hour. If you want even more speed, the high-quality horseshoe, which is a workbench level one blueprint, can be equipped to increase the horse’s speed by 9km an hour.

The high-quality horseshoe and road sign armor can also be bought for a 100 scrap, which can be bought within the outpost, allowing you to bypass getting their blueprints and manually crafting them.

Harvesting Your Horse

Horses can also be used for means of food and resources. Once killed, a horse will yield multiple resources with the number of resources gathered is dependent on the tool harvesting it, with the best being the knives, metal hatchet, and salvaged axe. These tools will collect 5 raw horse meat, 10 animal fat, 25 cloth, 50 leather, and 50 bones.

Leading Your Horse

An additional feature for horses includes the lead option. This allows you to lead the horse without needing to ride it. This can be useful if the horse manages to get stuck in some rocks. Once you’ve found your horse, keep it safe, well-fed, and hidden from any robbers wanting to steal your new friend. Horses can be a valuable addition to your survival, helping you travel and live within the world of Rust.

I hope this video has helped teach you about horses within Rust, and their equipment and effectiveness.

Thanks, guys for watching, and I hope to see you in the next video.
